for SCEA Treasurer
When I was serving as county and local president, teaching full time, it was a continuing comfort for me to know that Dave, as our stalwart county treasurer, had our budget and finances firmly under control and meeting our county goals. Due to his diligence, we were able to afford more space to bring members in and grow the power of our county and all the locals in Somerset. Dave is truly a great treasurer and a steward of our member’s dues!
-- Steve Beatty, NJEA Vice-President & former SCEA President
David Yastremski, Treasurer of the SCEA, brings to the table years of experience in producing and maintaining the SCEA budget, the allocation of funds and the responsibility for taxes, and many other duties. His dedication, advocacy and pride in the organization is the epitome of what a leader should be.
-- Barbara Parker (former SCEA President)
Over the past fifteen years, I have remained steadfast in my role as SCEA Treasurer to ensure accountability and responsibility in county programming.
Since 2008, I have worked with county leaders to expand our county's role in so many ways:
We sold a building and negotiated new office space. Since then I have toured other properties and assisted in renegotiating our current lease. I will continue working to ensure our next lease is negotiated with the knowledge and experience to get our members the best deal!
Over the years, we have endured emergencies such as flooding and roof collapses which required prolonged and extensive conversations and negotiations with insurance companies. I am ready and equipped to navigate our insurers when such emergencies occur.
Our expanded programming included significant increases in the number of stipends paid to SCEA members serving at the national, state and local levels. I will continue ensuring that payroll is completed on-time, with the proper attention to payroll deductions and accurate tax reporting.
We have instituted and budgeted new stipend opportunities for the following roles while I have been treasurer.
NEA Representative Delegates to help offset the costs associated with performing this very important work.
SCEA members who serve on NJEA committees.
County Liaisons to share SCEA news & initiatives at the local level.
Chairpersons of our subcommittees who are investing their time and talent toward great county initiatives
SCEA has always budgeted in a transparent and responsible manner. I will continue to ensure our budget responsibility and ethically serves our organization’s efforts to support our locals and members who work tirelessly for Somerset County students.

When people ask me why I'm so involved in my union, I share the story when my father, a high school chemistry teacher in Nanticoke, PA, walked the line during a series of selective strikes over a two-year period. You'll see my mother's writing under the photo, "some of the harder times. March, 1983." Yes, we did not live a life of luxury; my father played drums in a band on weekends and during the summers; however, without his union, our life would likely be much tougher. I honor his work ethic and his devotion for his family in everything I do today.
